Understanding incoming, POP Mail settings and ports

If you are using an iONLINE's POP/Plesk mailbox's you are required to enter in an outgoing mail server or SMTP server when setting up your mailbox on computers and other devices.

In this document, we outline how to find out what your incoming and outgoing mail server settings are.

Incoming/outgoing Mail Server Settings

iONLINE uses the same incoming and outgoing mail server for POP accounts.
Incoming Mail Server: Hosting-01.ionline.co.za
Outgoing Mail Server/SMTP: Hosting-01.ionline.co.za

This means your server will be hosting-01.ionline.co.za  for both incoming and outgoing mail server settings.

 IMAP VS POP

When you configure email for incoming mail settings, you can choose between IMAP and POP3 protocols.

The protocol you choose defines how your email client handles synchronization with your mail server. We recommend using IMAP as your mail will then be stored online using your hosting space and can be synced HOWEVER this does mean you will be charged for the hosting space used on the server.

Here is some more information on POP3 VS IMAP.

POP3

With POP3, your emails are downloaded on your device and erased from your mail server after the download is complete. iONLINE recommends using this option if you do not want your mail to be saved on your hosting space(which would take up space) or if you do not want mail stored online.

POP3 Ports

The default ports for POP3 are Port 110 for a non-encrypted connection and Port 995 if you would like to configure a secure connection.

IMAP

When using IMAP, your emails are downloaded on your device, but the emails are also kept on your mail server. Any action performed on your devices are synchronized with your server. iMAP is a good option for you if you use multiple devices to read your emails as they are synchronized and you can download all emails on all devices and you have enough space on your hosting package with iONLINE or are willing to pay more for hosting when you reach your limits.

IMAP Port

You will need to use Port 143 for a non-encrypted connection, or you can use Port 993 for secure connection.
